Situated directly below the home of owners Brian Malk and Nancy Heitel, Malk Family Vineyard lies adjacent to the Fay Vineyard at the base of the Palisades, edging the valley floor on the eastern slopes of the Stags Leap District. Surrounded by a mixture of live oak and black oak trees, the vineyard property begins with a gentle slope at the base, rising dramatically to the Palisades in the background. The vines on this two acre vineyard are bilateral cordon and unilaterally trained on a vertical trellis system. The property was purchased in 1997 and is farmed with meticulous, hands-on care. Low yields and a philosophy to produce as a winegrower, ensure the fruit is of the highest quality from vintage to vintage. Read less

A bit of an acidic bite, but not too much. In fact, it's a touch creamy and it's very refreshing.

A lovely aromatic array bursts from the bottle at first whiff. Scents of ripe peach, kumquat and pear float on delicate wafts of green grass, graphite and vanilla, offering an exhilarating medley. At 30 minutes, notes of Granny Smith apple, straw and honeysuckle join the mix, creating even more interest. The palate is greeted by a lively mixture of peach and citrus, making for an intriguing interplay of sweet and tart fruit. A pleasant acidity offers promise of further development, and hints of fresh green leafiness, straw, apple, mulberry and honeysuckle drift through the center, mingling with one another in a delightful quadrille around the scrumptious core of yellow fruit.

Nose/ As with all her previous vintages, thankfully zero cat/ammonia wafts. Soft, clean, cream and toast notes layered over gorgeous, dripping, aromas of pear and yellow tropicals. Freshly steeped hay. Citrus zest over crushed river rocks. Yellow flowers. Taste/ Medium-full mouthfeel. Multiple layers of tropicals, soft citrus, pear, lychee, and yellow flowers. Honeydew melon with a spritz of lime juice. Ever-changing. The wood layers are thankfully devoid of any butter or vanilla notes, and her softness and depth are simply marvels for a sauvignon blanc. An extended, and a lightly wooded, close also sports a thin knifing of crushed rocks. Another simply stunning sauvignon blanc from Malk Family Vineyards. As I’ve said before, she just might just change what you think a SB can be. Somehow, Robbie Meyer can craft sauvignon blancs that are better at, or just below, room temperature. Her body is full, supple, and coating but she also pops you with zesty acids. Bravo. Rating = A+ / 5 Glasses / 5 out of 5 stars, etc.! Do yourself a favor and try this gem!

Elegant yet sassy. This SB has a medium bodied feel and a color of straw. The nose brings images of summer on a farm, sweet stone fruits, fresh cut hay and wet rocks from a steady flowing stream. On the palate the acidity is well balanced with the flavors of peaches, tart apples and hay. It's long finish leaves you wanting more. If you find it....buy it!!!

The 2010 Malk Sauvignon Blanc has more stone fruit and river rocks on the nose than the wonderful 2009 vintage. Her delightful nose also shows crisp hay, peaches, light, crisp leather, asparagus, and dry grasses. Lovely. The taste of the 2010 = medium-full mouthfeel. Wonderfully integrated melon and peach flavors. Clean wood lines and elegant structure. The finish is bright and juicy. Fantastic juice from Malk once again.

Its hard to find good California sauv blanc at any price, but this is certainly one that makes a grand impression. The balance of fruit, acidity and aroma all come together for a luscious mouthful culminating in a lingering finish. This wine too should only get better with a little bottle age.
