Nicolas Potel, in contrast to many vignerons who have far flung holdings (or source from many different communes as does Potel) described 2001 as very homogenous and even more surprisingly, termed the performance of the Côte de Nuits versus the Côte de Beaune as about even. I have not completed my tastings in the Côte de Beaune but based on the 30 or so visits completed in November, this is certainly not my impression, especially in Volnay and Beaune. What was a Brooding, reticent and completely backward nose is now much more expressive though it still requires the better part of an hour to display the notes of crushed black cherries, ripe earth and a background hint of wood that slightly sweetens the moderately robust, muscular flavors that display very good if not outstanding density but first rate balance. The intensity builds from the mid-palate and the depth that I had hoped would develop clearly has but as noted, be sure to give this adequate time to develop if you elect to open a bottle now as it's clearly still on the way up.
