- Véronique Drouhin characterized the 2003 vintage as one of exceptionally low yields as our average wine came in between only 18 and 20 hl/ha. Sugars were good but we did have to correct some though not all of the cuvees. As it turned out, we were happy that we didn't correct all of them as there was the fascinating phenomenon of acidities actually going up during the primary fermentations! The Drouhin '03s are mostly in line with the overall quality of the vintage, which is to say mixed with some real standouts such as the Bonnes Mares and a few that disappointed, like the Charmes-Chambertin read more...and Clos de la Roche. Also, Drouhin is introducing what they are touting as a premium, and branded, Bourgogne using the name Véro in both red and white. The red is reviewed here and the white will be reviewed in Issue 19. (Dreyfus-Ashby & Co., New York, NY; UK agent is Dreyfus-Ashby with a number of additional sources, including Howard Ripley, Ballantynes of Cowbridge, Lea & Sandeman and Decorum Vintners). Very ripe plum and a subtle hint of dry port wrapped in black fruit and spice notes introduce rich, full and elegant flavors and an opulent, generous but firm finish of serious length. This is a big, robust and powerful wine that makes a statement as it completely coats the palate with sappy extract. Atypical but impressive. (hide)
