Madroña Red Blend Sierra Foothills Quintet Reserve 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

Madroña Vineyards' "Quintet" is a classic blend of five Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Individual barrels selected from only the most exceptional lots were blended together to create this full-bodied Bordeaux style wine, rich in flavor and aroma with complexity and depth which speak for themselves. The 2002 Vintage Technically, I believe a quintet in the world of music can be comprised of five tubas or five accordions or five of anything. But when we set out blending our 2002 Quintet, it was the perfect complexity of the flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon that we aspired to in our flagship wine. Not one variety dominates in either the nose or palate. Rather, each contributes an aspect while supporting and highlighting the characters of the others. The aromas start with a Cabernet herbiness of crushed fresh spice with notes of bell pepper. Delve a little deeper and the dark cherry of Merlot and the blueberry of Malbec appear. And with a hint of Cab Franc roasted coffee sprinkled with lavender, the nose is complete. The palate, texturally, is the approachable side of mountain Merlot, laced with a Petit Verdot tannin backbone and an enticingly soft Malbecian mid-palate. The first sip is elegant and melodious with a myriad of sensations. A bit of cherry, a dash of vanilla, a splash of plum, a pinch of green olives, a sprig of oregano—the characters meld together, entertwining graciously to a lingering finish of Cabernet-soaked cherries. A couple years of age has certainly married the varieties making this Quintet a symphony for any heavy beef stew. Enjoy! Printable wine description and facts (2002 Reserve Quintet)

The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch shares a similar inky/purple color, but exhibits a higher pH style with more grilled meat, espresso, and chocolate notes in the ripe, heady perfume than the 2001. Wine Advocate ReviewThe 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch has turned out better out of bottle than it was from cask. An extraordinary expression of Cabernet Sauvignon with ethereal notes of Asian spice, white flowers, creme de cassis, licorice, blackberries, and roasted espresso, the wine cascades over the palate with no hard edges. Extraordinarily pure, rich, and sweet with everything in perfect proportions and integrated impeccably, this is a monumental Cabernet Sauvignon with complexity, finesse, and amazing balance. It should drink well young but keep for 20 or more years. This is a prodigious effort from Napas top viticulturalist - a man who has had an enormously positive impact on the quality of the finest wines of Napa Valley.
