Macphail Winery Pinot Noir Sundawg Ridge Vineyard 2011

External Review by WineExpress.com:

MacPhail has created a cult following for their intensely flavored power-packed Pinot Noirs. At 280 feet elevation, among rolling hills, old apple orchards and chestnut groves, the Sundawg Ridge Vineyard sits above the fog many mornings. This 6.9-acre, sustainably farmed vineyard was planted by the Kensler Family in 1999 and benefits from exceptional exposure, temperate microclimate and mineral rich Goldridge soils. This small vineyard consistently comes up big and this vintage carries on that tradition. Grapes were hand picked and hand sorted twice. A 5 day cold soak preceded fermentation and the wine age sur lie in 50% new French oak for 11 months. 90+ scores across the board including Wine Enthusiast Magazine who gave it 93 saying "The Sequana Winery has had enormous success with this vineyard over the years, and now MacPhail dips into it, with impressive results. The first impression is of acidity, mouthwatering and tangy. Then the flavors explode into a rainbow of red cherries, pomegranates, persimmons and exotic spices."

Sequana Vineyards is a joint project between Tom Selfridge and Pinot Noir virtuoso James MacPhail, focusing on single vineyard wines from some of California's most elite Pinot Noir zones. This 2009 shows the exceptional quality and complexity that can be derived from this stellar grape in ideal conditions. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this wine 95 points and said "Another great release from Sequana of this single-vineyard bottling, which hails from the golden slopes of the cool, southwestern part of the Russian River Valley. It’s rich in raspberry, pomegranate and persimmon fruit, elaborated with sweet new French oak, but saved from being merely ripe by a firm minerality and brilliant acidity. Should develop interestingly over the next 10 years." Very Limited!

Rating: 84/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. The earthy, funky smell that attends the otherwise ripe cherry/sweet rhubarb fruit and light oak character in the nose shows up again on the palate and refuses to let up even with airing while latter palate acidity adds its own spot of bother to the proceedings.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast You'll find an unusual note of freshly crushed black pepper in this Pinot Noir. Not overwhelming, but enough to vie with the cherries, cola and sandalwood. It's and excel

Just named #12 on the Wine Enthusiast Magazine's Top 100 Wines for 2009. Sequana Vineyards is a joint project between Tom Selfridge and Pinot Noir virtuoso James MacPhail, focusing on single vineyard wines from some of California’s most elite Pinot Noir zones. This new release shows the exceptional quality and complexity that can be derived from this stellar grape in ideal conditions. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this wine 97 points and said “This distinctive Pinot Noir’s source is a tiny vineyard in cool Green Valley; the winegrower is James MacPhail, whose own MacPhail Pinot Noirs are so good. The wine itself is totally dry and silky and firm in acidity, yet soft in fine tannins. You might call it noble. It’s eruptive in cherries, sweet smoky bacon, raspberry granola and oaky sandalwood. Gorgeous, seductive and brilliant, a truly great Pinot Noir that’s impeccable now.” VERY LIMITED!!
