Macon Villages. Maison Joseph Drouhin 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A little forest floor and sweet herb on the autumnal nose with hints of waxy red fruit and rhubarb slowly emerging on the high-toned nose. In the mouth this is fresh with a nice edge of bottle sweetness tempering the rather high acid. A bit spiky on the midpalate with a touch of acetic acid highlighting the sweet/sour nature of the wine. Nice gentle raspberry fruit fades quickly on the short finish. 84pts

In 1880, Joseph Drouhin, who was from the Chablis region originally, chose the city of Beaune to found the business that bears his name.  Over the years and with each generation, the vineyard estate grew.  At the same time, the founder's passionate search for excellence and knowledge was handed down like a family heirloom; Maison Joseph Drouhin continues to ensure this valuable family heritage. Dedication to the diversity of Burgundy has always been the sole focus and vocation of Maison Joseph Drouhin, as vineyards - mostly premier and grand crus - were acquired in all major areas.   Out of firm conviction, Drouhin has adopted a biological and biodynamic approach to viticulture.  Listening to nature: from vine to glass, at every step in the elaboration of the wine, a profound respect and deference to nature prevails. From its very beginning, Maison Joseph Drouhin has aimed for an ideal of perfection and elegance.  The style of Joseph Drouhin combines balance, harmony and character, providing infinite pleasure.   Thanks to its open-minded world view, Joseph Drouhin introduces the best of Burgundy to all continents.  Its active presence in many countries is the surest proof of its desire to get acquainted and understand other cultures and styles of living. I received this wine as a gift. I had never heard of this particular wine but I was pleasantly surprised. I have never rated a wine before so please take this as a rookie rating though straight from the gut. This wine has a sunlit appearance, light taste and finishes with a hint of citrus. I think it would pair well with a light snack of salad and fruit. I would give this wine 3 1/2 glasses.

The color of the wine is bright and limpid. The nose is floral and fruity. Very straightforward and direct on the palate, as if biting into a grape. Fresh and light, with a very pleasant aftertaste.

Here an exceptionally fresh nose of citrus peel and white flowers merges seamlessly into rich and nicely detailed flavors that possess lovely intensity and an attractively dry finish that offers notably better depth and more length as well. This offers fine quality for its level. Burghound.

Supple, generous and distinctive for its black olive and mineral overtones to a core of ripe currant and blackberry, lingering on the expressive finish against polished tannins. Drink now through 2016.

An unusually complex nose for the appellation offers up notes of ripe upper and lower register red berry fruits and warm earth where the latter element can also be found on the rich full-bodied and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a delicious and solidly persistent finish. A lovely Clos du Roi. Burghound.

Aromas of mulberry, musky game and white pepper. Sweet, layered and lush, with raspberry and white pepper flavors sexed up by an element of apricot skin. Really builds on the back end. This is fruitier than the more savory 2008 version.
