Macmurray Ranch Russian River Pinot Noir 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Clean, almost sharp on the nose with a subtle jammy edge to the slow to emerge black raspberry, orange marmalade and floral aromas that lay over a spicy, soy edged oak imprint. Round, seamless and easy in the mouth with lots of cranberry and wild cherry fruit. There’s a subtle touch of herb here along with some light milk chocolate notes and wood spice. A little four square in the mouth with a tight, somewhat dry, woody finish. 86pts

Sweet and darkly spicy with a candied blackberry tone and a hint of black pepper over slightly weedy and slightly wood sweetened fruit. Quite acidic in the mouth with a small ball of sweet, dark cherry fruit framed by a ton of acid, that leads to a woody finish with astringent tannins and a metallic tone. 83pts

With light oak and toast notes on the nose this starts off on the dark side but adds nice cherry pie fruit tones on the palate that are soft and supple. there's a touch of vanilla and baking spice on the backend before the black cherry fruit powers through on the medium length finish. This lacks some detail but makes up for it with its balanced depth of fruit. 87pts

Touch of heat on the nose with youthful acidity and aromas of cedar dust, ripe raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate with hints of crisp cranberry. Some light, herbal peppery notes. Tad hot on the palate due to both alcohol and high acid. Slightly abrasive, but should burn off with time. Pretty, aromatic red berry fruit with nice cedar notes. Flavors of currant, raspberry, cranberry and some red cherry. Nice flavor, but the heat takes away from the experience. Chilling it a touch might help, or simply waiting it out. 86 pts.

Great fruit flavors and balance. A bit darker in color than most Pinots. Easy to drink.

Dark and rich in the glass. Expressively perfumed with aromas of crushed cherry along with strawberry and currant. More swirling gives way to an earthniess and toasty oak influence. Very pretty fruit. Lush on the palate with vivid acidity and red and blackberry fruit. Raspberry, bramble fruit, pomegranate and some light spice in the way of herbs and osky spice. Some cinnamon and even suggestions of clove. Very tasty and richly textured. Dry finish.

On the nose I found aromas of pepper, road tar and just a slight hint of a mineral whiff. This Pinot Noir is ready right now and was very drinkable with a nice amount of acidity and tannins and a slender bit of oak and strawberries. Not a deeply complex wine but I found it very enjoyable.

Slightly better than the Central Coast cuvée is the 2012 Pinot Noir Russian River. It has a deeper ruby color with cherry fruit, rose petals, forest floor and a whiff of oak. Aged for eight months in a combination of French and American oak (25% new and 75% neutral), it is a big production cuvée of 60,000 cases, and is best drunk over the next several years.

With classic raspberry, cherry and sandalwood flavors, wrapped into a delicately crisp mouthfeel, this is a classic Russian River Pinot for drinking now. Everything about it suggests beef, whether it’s in a taco or a full-fledged steak.

A rich, expressive style, with deep, tannin-laced blackberry, raspberry, spice and herb notes. Full-blown, focused and persistent. Drink now through 2022.

From the home property, the 2011 Pinot Noir Russian River (13.6% natural alcohol) reveals a more earthy, cinnamon, clove, autumnal, vegetative style with plenty of cherry fruit and spice as well as a surprisingly complex style for a $28 wine. There are 50,000 cases of this lovely Pinot that can be drunk over the next 2–3 years.

Complex, with a mix of berry, loamy earth, spice and cedar flavors, ending with edgy tannins that impart a drying sensation. Drink now through 2017.

Slightly more serious is the 2010 Pinot Noir Russian River, which comes from five separate Gallo-owned vineyards and is aged nine months in mostly French oak. It exhibits pomegranate, plum and red currant notes intermixed with leafy, herbal undertones. Round, generous and pure, it should drink well for 3–4 years.

Medium-weight, this subtle style is most interesting on the finish, where the dried berry, spice and anise flavors are woven together. Ends with dry tannins. Drink now through 2018.
