Macmurray Estate Vineyards Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

The third in a string of outstanding vintages in the Russian River Valley, 2014 got off to an early start with a short bloom season and desirable fruit set. The absence of significant weather events meant grapes ripened evenly in a mild growing season that remained temperate for its duration apart from cooler, occasionally damp weather in September, which allowed flavors to catch up in what was still a historically early harvest. Throughout the season, the Valley’s hallmark fog intrusion allowed grapes in our estate vineyards to retain vibrancy and bright fruit flavors, translating to expressive, fruit-forward Chardonnay with elegant breadth and lift. Our MacMurray Estate Vineyards 2014 Russian River Valley Chardonnay is a rich expression of this celebrated appellation, offering elegant aromas of bright citrus, lemon meringue and peach underscored by hints of fresh apricot. On the palate, subtle notes of toasted vanilla and a hint of brown spice from oak aging are framed by a luxurious mouthfeel. Notes of macadamia, mineral and honey linger on a satisfying finish polished with lifted acidity.

More than any other variety, Pinot Noir has the ability to translate place.  To convey the wisdom of its soil, the tenor of its climate, the emotion of its caretakers.  At its clearest expression, Pinot is a calling to consider what a wine can be. Our calling is to make the best Pinot Noir. MacMurray Estate Vineyards is deeply rooted in Sonoma County. Our namesake vineyard, MacMurray Ranch, has been a farmstead since the 1850s, farmed by the Porter family until actor Fred MacMurray bought the ranch in 1941. Fred embraced the rancher’s lifestyle, raising prize-winning cattle and farming crops here for decades, while his children rode horses through the hills. Fred’s daughter—the actress, screenwriter and activist Kate MacMurray—retains an indelible tie to the estate, helping us share the heritage of our namesake vineyard, historic property and celebrated wine. Transformed into a world-class vineyard in 1996, MacMurray Ranch quickly became one of the Russian River Valley’s most acclaimed Pinot Noir vineyards.  Today, MacMurray Estate Vineyards has grown to encompass estate vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley and the Central Coast, but we continue to honor our roots and the history of the MacMurray Ranch. The original buildings have been faithfully restored, and the 1,500-acre property is home to old-growth oaks, Redwood trees and indigenous wildlife. Winemaker Boyd Morrison and his team craft our collection of Pinot Noir wines, beginning with our home vineyard and extending to several estate vineyard sites throughout the Russian River Valley and the Central Coast. Soft green apple and pear aromas with notes of honey and light floral hints. This is delicate to start, and surprisingly so, but starts to warm up in the mouth imparting more honey-butter notes of white peach, green apple and a fruity, floral finish that does show some restrained oak notes.
