Macan Rioja Clasico Bodegas Rothschild & Vega Sicilia 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

This 2008 Macan Rioja has rich black cherry fruit and a beautiful medium body that has a smooth texture. The finish gives notes of dried leather. A delicious wine now, but has the structure and acidity to age. Benjamin de Rothschild and Pablo Alvarez had been friends for many years and decided to work together on a project in Rioja. Since, Javier Ausas, the winemaker at Vega Sicilia, has been perfecting the blend from the 40 parcel of 30-40 year old Tempranillo vineyards. Stylistically, Alvarez says the wines fall somewhere between an elegant, light Rioja and a riper modern example. Alvarez says: "We feel that the old wines need to evolve and the modern wines are too international and don’t really represent a great region like Rioja. We are very excited about the quality of these wines; Rioja is the most important region in Spain and we just want to add our grain of sand to a place this special." -The Wine Enthusiast
