Mac Forbes Syrah Yarra Valley Gruyere 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

What began as a leap of faith with Mac’s wines appears to be paying off quickly. His wines are well received (in 2008 Jamie Goode described him as “genius winemaker” on his Wineanorak blog). Mac has worked for the past three years as a consultant to some growers in the Carnuntum region. His Europhile approach to wine making: early harvesting, natural acidity, his search for cool sites, and a relative absence of new oak mean his wines sit very comfortably on our list. These are not wines which leap out of the glass and assault and exhaust the senses. They are cool, restrained wines, with a clear European influence, and each has a strong personality. He has proved himself very quickly as a brilliant winemaker. Gruyere is a stunning site in the Yarra Valley owned by the Bisley family. North facing, dry grown with wonderful soils reward years of hand tending and total vineyard health. This site also grows the gorgeous and highlyexpressive Bordeaux varieties and Syrah. The vineyard is located just southof the Coldstream vineyard and offers highly perfumed and herbal Pinot. This Syrah is grown by Warwick Bisley who also grows the Pinot mentioned above. Also north facing and dry grown, this wine is a little closed after bottling but is so focused and flavoursome. he wine was matured in old and new wood for 18 months and was racked 3 times.

Mac Forbes isn't afraid to push the boundaries of cool climate viticulture and winemaking. Eight small vineyards (Yarra Valley and Strathbogie Ranges) are hand tended with the focus being plant and soil health. This respect for soil, vine and environment continues in the winery where fruit balance, purity and minimal inputs are considered paramount in allowing for maximum vineyard expression. Winemaking is old fashioned and thoughtful with each parcel of fruit handled separately. The Yarra Valley comprises a number of sub-regions, providing a platform for pinot noir, chardonnay, syrah and cabernets. The elevated Strathbogie Ranges is cool and dry growing some of the most pure and distinctive riesling in the world. Read less
