Mac Forbes Gruyere Chardonnay 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

This is the inaugural release of this wine. There are only a few rows of Chardonnay in the Gruyere vineyard and this wine normally gets blended into the Yarra Valley Chardonnay although a small amount was bottled by hand in 2008 to see where it went. After sitting in the cellar for 18 months the 2008 Gruyere blew the team away. In Mac's words "...we obviously underestimated it at assemblage." No mistake was made with the 2010 which always looked too good to blend away. The quantities are so small that Mac has bottled the entire 2010 production in magnums - respect. The Forbes power trio have crafted the North facing Gruyere fruit into a coiled, lip smacking wine of zippy grapefruit and lemony citrus fruits packed out with crunchy lemon and juicy apricot kernel pith. It's racy but there is a really feeling of density as well. The length is spot on, the balance pin point and we have the feeling that this agile big bottle will go the distance.

Mac Forbes isn't afraid to push the boundaries of cool climate viticulture and winemaking. Eight small vineyards (Yarra Valley and Strathbogie Ranges) are hand tended with the focus being plant and soil health. This respect for soil, vine and environment continues in the winery where fruit balance, purity and minimal inputs are considered paramount in allowing for maximum vineyard expression. Winemaking is old fashioned and thoughtful with each parcel of fruit handled separately. The Yarra Valley comprises a number of sub-regions, providing a platform for pinot noir, chardonnay, syrah and cabernets. The elevated Strathbogie Ranges is cool and dry growing some of the most pure and distinctive riesling in the world. Read less
