M. Chapoutier St. Joseph Deschants 2006

Member Review by duncan 906:

This bottle was part of a lot I bought on the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/64390. Saint-Joseph is an AOC created in 1956 [although wine production in the area goes back to before the Romans ] for red and white wines from the area around the village of Tournon on the west bank of the Rhone opposite Tain/Hermitage on the east about 40 miles south of Lyon. The red wines are made from the syrah grape [although since 1979 up to 10% of the white grapes marsanne and rousanne have been allowed in a blend ].Saint-Joseph is not considered as prestigious as Hermitage or Cote-Rotie but usually offers better value for money.M.Chapoutier is a well known vineyard owner/negociant business based in the Rhone valley but also operating in other parts of France such as Alsace and the south-west as well as Australia and the USA.Since 1996 the labels have been in braille which is quite distinctive. My bottle comes from an organic vineyard owned by Chapoutier and is 100% syrah aged in oak barrels.I started the bottle last night with my supper of bacon stew and I did enjoy it.There is a very clean blackcurrant and plum style fruit there with a hint of pepper and soft tannins.I thought it a lovely accompaniment to the stew.

M. Chapoutier:
The name CHAPOUTIER is present in the Rhône Valley since 1808. In 1879, the distant ancestor Polydor CHAPOUTIER was the first to begin to buy vines, thus moving from the status of wine-grower of an estate to that of a viticulturist, a wine producer and a businessman. The pioneering spirit was already present in the family.
