M. Chapoutier Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne 2012

External Review:

Chapoutier’s most basic Hermitage, this is showy and succulent without being blowsy in the least. The fruit is black and red, juicy and alive, generous yet underlined by firm, savory earthiness and a supple leather note. While it may be hard to resist now, this is built to last: Best to wait at least until 2015.

M. Chapoutier:
The name CHAPOUTIER is present in the Rhône Valley since 1808. In 1879, the distant ancestor Polydor CHAPOUTIER was the first to begin to buy vines, thus moving from the status of wine-grower of an estate to that of a viticulturist, a wine producer and a businessman. The pioneering spirit was already present in the family.

The 2007 Ermitage La Sizeranne displays a similar deep ruby/purple-tinged color in addition to sweet aromas of raspberries, black currants, smoke, gun flint, and spice. This full-bodied, well-made wine reveals outstanding richness, purity, and overall balance. Consume it over the next 15–20 years.

Mature, with soft, fleshy, open-knit damson plum, raspberry sauce and mulled black cherry fruit notes backed by modest grip and a lingering black tea note on the finish. Drink now through 2014.

This has a core of dark plum and cooked spice notes, while slightly edgy tobacco and olive notes flitter around the edges. There’s latent grip, with a smoldering charcoal hint on the finish. Drink now through 2014.

Glass-staining ruby. A complex bouquet offers raspberry, cherry, olive, tobacco and violet. Very syrah, with strong red and dark berry flavors and complicating notes of candied flowers and Indian spices. The spiciness carries through the finish, which is smooth, sweet and very long. This is showing good complexity already.

Monier de la Sizeranne is Chapoutier's most popular Hermitage. The grapes are sourced from several vineyards from a blending of different soils from West to East. Les Bessards with a granitic soil constitutes the "soul" of a good Hermitage, Le Méal with old alluvial terraces, with a lot of gravel. And finally Les Greffieux with silty soil. Each one contributes a different character to the final blend. The Wine Spectator scored this 94 points saying "A very minerally, driven style, with a strong iron-tinged spine driving the red and black currant, coffee, loam and dark licorice notes. This is tightly wound on the finish, so cellar to let it stretch out. Best from 2010 through 2020." Limited!
