What to Expect

Coming from a Granite hillside in the north of France's Rhone Valley, Hermitage is one of the world's greatest expressions of the Syrah grape. Blessed with a full southern exposition, the hill of Hermitage allows the vines to fully ripen, yet its poor soils stress the vines, reducing yields and ensuring a remarkable complexity in the finished wines. The wines tend to be medium to medium-full bodied with bright acidity and velvety tannins that are enmeshed in slightly gamey, olive scented fruit that recalls black raspberries and boysenberries.

Winemakers Notes

The age of the vines (65 years in average) guarantees a production of very high quality.

The Pavillon vineyard has a surface area of about 4 ha. Its geological composition is characteristic. The soil is made up of a fine layer of deposits on a granitic ground.

Grapes are harvested when they are just beyond peak maturity. Due to their age, these vines give low yields.

The grapes ferment in open wooden vats after total destemming. From one to two daily treadings ensure a good extraction of the tannins. The temperature of fermentation varies between 20 and 32°C. read more...

Reviews

Rating: 93-96 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 130, January/February 2007 Opaque black ruby. Deep, concentrated cherry, cassis and mulberry aromas, with bright floral and mineral accents. Extremely intense, with a sweet raspberry note adding complexity and a suave aspect to the wine's darker fruit flavors. Wonderfully pure and vibrant on the finish, which is gently tannic and shows outstanding concentration.

"The biggest production cuvee, the 2005 Ermitage Le Pavillon has a dense purple color, the classic acacia flower, graphite-based, smoky creme de cassis nose with a tremendous intensity and a full-bodied power and richness that is awesome. These are monumental wines, and when you think that this wine, much like most of its siblings, is made from yields of 12-18 hectoliters per hectare, the explanation for its concentration and extraordinary expression of terroir is obvious...98."
