What to Expect

Coming from a Granite hillside in the north of France's Rhone Valley, Hermitage is one of the world's greatest expressions of the Syrah grape. Blessed with a full southern exposition, the hill of Hermitage allows the vines to fully ripen, yet its poor soils stress the vines, reducing yields and ensuring a remarkable complexity in the finished wines. The wines tend to be medium to medium-full bodied with bright acidity and velvety tannins that are enmeshed in slightly gamey, olive scented fruit that recalls black raspberries and boysenberries.

Reviews

Rating: 94-97 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 130, January/February 2007 Dark red. Explosive red berry aromas are accented by exotic sandalwood, cinnamon and potpourri. Wonderfully textured, with creamy cherry-vanilla and raspberry preserve flavors, very soft tannins and a subtle hint of smoky bacon. Takes on a bright mineral tone on the finish, which features very sweet red fruit tones and impressive length. This should be a beauty with eight to ten years of cellaring. (The 2005 Ermitage Les Greffieux had just been racked and was impossible to assess with confidence.)
