The name CHAPOUTIER is present in the Rhône Valley since 1808. In 1879, the distant ancestor Polydor CHAPOUTIER was the first to begin to buy vines, thus moving from the status of wine-grower of an estate to that of a viticulturist, a wine producer and a businessman. The pioneering spirit was already present in the family.

The 1997 Hermitage Le Pavillon displays a saturated purple color, and a fabulously intense nose of blackberry liqueur intermixed with floral scents, smoke, licorice, tar, and Chinese black tea aromas. There is wonderful concentration, massive body, and a monster finish in this decadently rich Hermitage. It possesses low acidity, but lots of concentration, extract, and length. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2035.
Chapoutier's regular cuvee of 1995 Cote Rotie offers a spicy, peppery, sweet, black-raspberry-scented nose, crisp acidity, medium body, fine ripeness, and a surprising degree of elegance. The wine is aged in small oak casks, and it should be at least excellent. Michel Chapoutier is quick to say that 1995 is one of the all-time great vintages for the northern Rhone, and in particular for Chapoutier. Yields were tiny throughout all the estate vineyards, with most of the vineyards coming in under 20 hectoliters per hectare, and some of the top vineyards harvesting under a ton of fruit per acre.
Wonderful harmony. Rich and full on the palate, showing smooth tannin structure. Lovely balance, with the clean blackberry, mint, vanilla and black pepper paving the way to a velvety finish. Drink now through 2003.
Medium ruby-red hue. Very ripe, jammy aromas have a hint of coal tar and spice. A soft attack leads to a medium body with dark fruit flavors and ripe tannins. There is more acidity that at first apparent. Drink now or later.

Bright deep ruby. Blackberry, violet, tar, shoe polish and game on the nose, plus a light floral note; at once vibrant and surmuri. Superconcentrated, remarkably intense flavors of crystallized black cherry, cassis and licorice. An extremely persistent wine of noteworthy finesse, yet also one with a powerful structure for aging. One of the standouts of the vintage.
