M. Chapoutier Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac 1990

Winemaker's Notes:

'Top 100 Wine of 1992 (#89)' and 91 points Wine Spectator: Ripe, rich and complex, with deep currant, earth, oak and spice flavors that are finely woven together. The tannins are firm and rugged and clamp down on the finish. Best after 1997. (8/31/92)

M. Chapoutier:
The name CHAPOUTIER is present in the Rhône Valley since 1808. In 1879, the distant ancestor Polydor CHAPOUTIER was the first to begin to buy vines, thus moving from the status of wine-grower of an estate to that of a viticulturist, a wine producer and a businessman. The pioneering spirit was already present in the family.
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

The 1990 La Sizeranne, made from yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare, has begun to close up. The color is a dark purple, and with coaxing, the super ripe nose of cassis, licorice, minerals, and spices has begun to emerge. This full-bodied, tannic wine was aged in 60% new oak casks. It possesses copious quantities of black fruit flavors, a chewy texture, and very fine length. I suspect this wine needs until the turn of the century to approach maturity. It should last for 25-30 years.
