A magnificent effort, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac boasts huge notes of kirsch, exotic herbs, lavender, cedar, fig, black cherry, black currant, licorice and roasted meats. This flamboyant, rich, full-throttle Chateauneuf du Pape should age well for two decades. It will be interesting to follow this wine’s evolution alongside the brilliant 2009 and 2007 Barbe Racs.
100% black grenache. Deep garnet in color with the nose expressing aromas of dried fruits, red fruits, and cocoa, roasted coffee appearing with the years. Very powerfull mouthfeel, with long length. The fruits and the chocolate are the major aromatics of this wonderfully rich dessert wine. It can work as an aperitive. The wines exhibit the distinctive pepper and spice of Syrah, but are bigger and rounder in the mouth, with great complexity coming from the Carignan and Grenache.
There are 440 cases of the 2010 Cote Rotie La Mordoree. While it is a very strong effort I would rank it a point or two below the 2009 which I believe is the finest La Mordoree since the awesome 1991. It offers an impressive dense ruby/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of bacon fat black olives black currants raspberries earth and forest floor. Ripe and medium-bodied with light to moderate tannin it is somewhat closed at present and will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring. A solid, pure style, with a beam of very fresh plum, black cherry and toasted anise notes moving through, followed by pretty hints of tar and red licorice on the polished, accessible finish. Shows more balance than oomph and should hang on nicely in the cellar. Drink now through 2020.
