The window is well and truly shut on the 1986 Banyuls. I had previously tried the 1980 and it was still faint signs of life. Alas, I fear it is time that the 1986 be buried into the ground. Intense mahogany colour. An expired drink stripped of any fruit and with only streaks of alcohol left which was probably at its peak a decade ago. I won’t tip it down the sink immediately but won’t feel hurt not finishing it. I’m thankful I don’t have any bottles left. 50/100 (i.e. it once was wine). A master craftsman of the Grenache grape, Chapoutier offers a cheap dessert wine in the Banyuls range that offers an alternative approach to Grenache. The latest vintages are only 12euros per 500ml bottle.
