M a N Family Wines Chenin Blanc Free-Run Steen 2014

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

The 2014 Free-Run Steen Chenin Blanc has a focused, clinical bouquet with pineapple and lemon zest, hints of passion fruit developing just behind. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity: plenty of tropical fruit on display here but neatly delineated on the tense and citric finish that linger in the mouth. Quite simply, this represents unbeatable value.

MAN Vintners:
This MAN thing began with three friends and an idea: to make a wine that we ourselves would love to buy. Good quality, excellent value, and cool packaging. Not exactly an epiphany, but enough to motivate us to action. What do we call it? Keeping peace in the family, we took the initials of our wives. (We each have one, that is.) Not exactly an epiphany, but enough to motivate us to action. What do we call it? Keeping peace in the family, we took the initials of our wives. (We each have one, that is.) So that is how we explained to Marie, Anette, and Nicky that we were going to be "busy" most weekends. It's for you! we told them. Could've slapped on something cute and furry but the world doesn't need another critter label. We are trying to do something different. It's the WINES we're excited about! Bold and gutsy, reflecting our extreme terroir. Grape growing in the Perdeberg Hills is not for wimps. There is little rainfall, so you have to be in tune with your vineyards. Too much crop or too much stress and you end up with grapes that can't ripen, or worse. But this is grape growing heaven for generations of our farmers. There are no fat, lazy bloated grapes here. The 2014 MAN Free Run Chenin Blanc (or Steen, as that grape is known in South Africa) is from old un-trellised bushvine grapes that are made into free-run juice. The wine is complex (acidity and sweetness play nicely) and full bodied, with strong tropical fruit flavors of pineapple, passion fruit and lemon-lime.
