Lyre Bird Hill Riesling Lyre Bird Hill Winery & Guest House Riesling Lyre Bird Hill Winery & Guest House In Gippsland Victoria 2005

Member Review by KrisChislett:

Shows bright apricot, peach and a little tangerine on the nose. Taste leans more toward pear and green apple rind, wet stone and mineral. Light in body, bright and lively, crisp and dry, but still with enough residual sugar to keep sweet Riesling lovers happy. Lingers nicely, and definitely delivers above the cost!

In 1986, Owen and Robyn Schmidt purchased the 15 acre property situated on the Inverloch Road at Koonwarra in South Gippsland, Victoria. It was formerly a greyhound racing track. A change of profession from Accountant to Vigneron was unfolding for Owen, and Robyn has enjoyed the opportunity to facilitate her catering and hospitality expertise. Pursuing a long time desire to make wine, Owen planted 1000 grape cuttings of three varieties. Never doing things by half measure, he also undertook a course in viticulture with Charles Sturt University, Wagga. The vineyard quickly developed to a small commercial size of 6 acres (8000 vines). The small collection of farm sheds used as the winery soon became inadequate, and a 200 square metre winery was built in time for the 1993 vintage. Tasting and sales facilities were completed in time for the issue of the liquor licence in early 1993. Recent years has seen the addition of a temperature controlled barrel room, under cover work area and verandah (and wood fired Pizza Oven). Read less

Very good wine, but there are others rieslings just as good and half the price.

This wine rocked my world - clean, crisp and pure with a beautiful juicy pear flavor. I tried it well chilled and just loved it. In fact this was my first Mosel Riesling and I am very excited to try more as I normally drink white burgundies. NOTE: 8.5% alcohol, sugar: 6. Released in January 2008.
