Harvest Notes - 2006 was marked as one of the latest harvests in the history of the Napa Valley. The long, drawn-out growing season provided plenty of anxious moments and surprises. A cool, wet spring kept the vines growing and delaying the ripening of the grapes. We found ourselves hedging the vines more often because of the high moisture level. In addition, we had to drop fruit to alleviate the botrytis pressure. Pinot Grigio has thin skins and tight clusters, making it one of the more difficult grapes to grow in wet years.
Though the harvest came very late, it was nearly perfect, thanks to read more...the spectacular September weather. The sugar and acid balance was outstanding, and the classic apricot and pear notes came through early during berry sampling. We began picking in the third week of September; in most years we have finished picking Pinot Grigio by then. We picked and pressed for ten straight days, in order capture the maximum of flavor from these grapes.
Winemaking - The 2006 Pinot Grigio was a carefully made blend of barrel and stainless steel fermentation. Half of the wine was aged in French oak barrels using native yeasts, which adds layers of weight and viscosity not found in commercial yeasts. The rest of the blend was fermented in stainless steel tanks, also using native yeasts. The fermentations lasted one month, with thirty percent of the wine going through malolactic fermentation to add texture. The wine was blended and bottled in the second week of April.
Tasting Notes - The 2006 Pinot Grigio is a star bright, light straw color and has a wonderfully expressive nose of pear, peach and apricot. This is a delicious wine with a forward surge of lemon zest and pine nut flavors. On the palate, there are flavors of citrus, fig, pear, pineapple and a faint underlying hint of oak. Barrel fermentation brings a full body to the entire mid-palate. Notes of honeysuckle and orange marmalade close out the finish. This wine is delightful to drink now, and will continue to be at its peak through the end of 2008.
Blend: 95% Pinot Grigio, 5% Chardonnay (hide)
