Blend: 75% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, 5% Petite Sirah Luna 2005 Napa Valley Sangiovese is the color of garnets, a deep and vibrant crimson. On the nose, there are enticing aromas of Bing cherries and spicy white pepper. The palate is filled with the sweet-tart flavor of rhubarb, accented by anise, rosemary and rose petals. The robust, velvety tannins linger for several minutes on the finish, like chocolate laced with red raspberries. This memorable wine should drink well through 2013.

Winemaker's Notes:

Vineyard - The majority of the fruit in our 2005 Sangiovese comes from grapes grown at the Game Farm Vineyard, on the valley floor in Oakville. The other two vineyards are situated at the base of Howell Mountain, at an elevation of 500 feet. Brunello clone vines were used, as well as several older clones. The soil in all three vineyards is shallow, rocky and volcanic. In these soils, the Sangiovese struggles to produce the highest quality grapes possible. The fruit was harvested over a period of 10 days in October, at an average of 25.5 degrees Brix, under ideal growing conditions. Winemaking - As with all of our wines, the fermentation was allowed to occur naturally, without any added yeasts or acids. Fermentation lasted 3 weeks, with another 21 days of maceration before pressing. The extended skin contact allowed us to coax out the subtle nuances and mid-palate texture that we strive for in our Sangiovese. Portions of Howell Mountain Merlot and Stagecoach Merlot were blended in to polish the wine and soften the finish. Finally, we added 5% Petite Sirah to the mix, for color stability and longer aging capability. The wine was aged in 25% new, and 75% once-used, French oak barrels, for 15 months. Most of the barrels were from Billon, with a few Bossuet and Radoux for their spice. This Sangiovese was bottled without fining or filtering, at an alcohol content of 15.2%.
