Luko Wines Continuing in the tradition of his Grandfather, "Josip Luko" (1900-1983) who made handcrafted wines for local royalty in the Old Country, (Banat-Vojvodina-former Yugoslavia) from 1929 to 1940, his Grandson, James Luko, owner and vintner of Luko Wines rekindles the Luko family's century old involvement in creating fine wines. His Grandfathers vineyard and wine business was destroyed and confiscated during and after World War II. Half a century later and another war in Yugoslavia brought James Luko back to the old country as he deployed for 12 years with the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Croatia (UNCRO), Sarajevo and Kosovo. "I was first stationed in city of Daruvar, in the region of Western Slavonia Croatia, in 1995 which has a tradition of winemaking back to the Roman Empire. During that ethnic conflict, I rented a small guest house of a local winemaker, which was literally among the vines. During the evening bombardments and pounding of the artillery, I felt cocooned and protected by the vineyard which overflowed and sheltered the little cottage. I thought that no matter what, there would be no strategic military target in the vineyard, and so it was, we passed through that terrible time unscathed. However, this experience brought me back to the roots of my Grandfather and his interest in wines, and I felt that somehow, the vineyard protected me in those times. After 12 years I returned to America and opened my own wine company with a goal of keeping the traditional ways of winemaking I knew my Grandfather used, as well as the winemaker I stayed with in Croatia. In 2007 James Luko presents his debut premium wines, the 2005 White Hawk Syrah and 2005 Saralee's vineyard, White Rhone Blend of Marsanne and Roussane. The consulting Master Winemaker for Luko Wines is Kian Tavakoli. Kian was the winemaker at Clos Du Val where he managed the red wine program. Before this, Kian spent four years at Opus One . With over a decade of winemaking experience, Kian has been instrumental in reaching our goals with each wine and keeping quality extremely high, we are grateful to him. James Luko Owner and Winemaker Originally from Canada, James earned his BA in International Affairs in Washington DC and his Masters Degree at Waterloo University in Canada. In 1992-93 he served as an analyst at the Canadian Department of Defence. After starting a law degree in Michigan, James was recruited by the United Nations as a Human Rights Field Investigator and served in Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo. In 2000, while serving with the Office of the Prosecutor for the International War Crimes Tribunal, he was appointed Deputy Head and Operations Officer of the Belgrade Liaison Office. He resigned his post after almost 12 years of service with the United Nations and returned to the U.S in 2005 to start Luko Wines. He is also due to have his book regarding his experiences with the UN and the Tribunal titled "Inside the Hague Tribunal" out in late 2008. Read less
