Luigi Pira 'Margheria' Barolo 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Limestone immediately on the nose over dark, dried black cherry fruit with hints of kind of black small seeds/watermelon seeds the way they are aromatic in the mouth. This feels a bit forced perhaps but it delivers big black fruit that is medicinally framed and full of minerality, with nice cut on the palate, a touch of late arriving dried mushroom, and tar, and a big finish with  lot of power to the long clear black fruit finale, 92pts

Pira's 2001 Barolo Margheria, a medium ruby, offers a super-fine, perfumed nose of spices, vanilla and menthol. Today it is austere and inexpressive on the palate showing just a hint of ripe red fruit, but displaying good length. Although some rough ... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2001 Luigi Pira Barolo Margheria 750ml

Silky and balanced, with coffee, cedar and plum character. Full-bodied, with very silky tannins and a long, long finish. Caressing, rich wine. Best after 2009.

The 2000 Barolo Margheria, fresher and sweeter than the regular bottling, features aromas of anisette and cinnamon, long and balanced flavors, and a greater intensity on the finish. Drink: 2005ndash;2017.

Luigi Pira, who has the most massive hands I have ever encountered on a vigneron, has fashioned a more structured effort with his 1997 Barolo Margheria. This wine has become more delineated and civilized after spending time in cask and foudre. Tell-tale notes of kirsch liqueur, dried flowers, rose petals, licorice, soy, leather, and tobacco combine with scents of seaweed, chocolate, and red/black fruits. The Margheria possesses firm tannin and muscle. It is a sensationally concentrated, full-bodied, powerful Barolo in need of 2ndash;4 years of cellaring. It should drink well between 2004ndash;2020.
