Luigi Pira Barolo Marenca 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Meaty and floral on the nose with rose petals and some nice minerality but the red currant fruit shows both sweetness and assertive medicinal notes. This is  broader on the palate, richer with a little less verve than the Margheria, though it does show fine minerally and tarry depth with gentle wild raspberry notes over the mineral cut, The tannins are also softer and the wine fades away on the finish more quickly ending on a somewhat diffuse note. 90pts

Leather, medicinal, red fruits, spicy, pink peppercorn, earthy and dark dried fruits. A bit blocky and matte on entry, rich, somewhat extracted, indistinct, dark fruit, licorice and earth top note, drying tannins on finish, dark coffee grinds, tannin and extracted.

This is just lovely on the nose with intense notes of wild flowers, lingonberries, balsamic incense and medicinal roots. There is a touch of warm toast buried in the fruit but the powerful, muscular aromatics of black cherry and menthol easily balance it out. On entry the tannins are noticeably sweet and fine and support complex red fruits that recall plum and red apple skins that segue to a deep, fruit driven mid-palate with classic red cherry fruit. This finishes with excellent length and turns a bit more minerally with cherry pit notes and a fine finale of bitter licorice. A powerful wine still very youthful but with impressive balance! 2008-2024 94pts.

This has a nicely integrated sweet wood tone on the nose but plenty of slightly gamy, medicinal fruit backing it up with strong notes of beet, licorice and menthol. It comes off as well polished even though the tannins are a bit stiff and woody. It's got a great core of black cherry fruit and the acids keep it finely focused allowing it to unfurl on the backend with burnished wood tones, beet root and aromatic root tones that stay nicely nervous. Not in a great place right now but well put together. I would recommend giving this at least 3 more years in the cellar for the tannins to fully integrate. 91pts 2012-2025

Gorgeous purity and structure. The nose has a dusty, bing cherry character that darkens to blackberries in the mouth. The longer you stay with the wine on your palate, the more it develops - cocoa and espresso notes and forest floor fruit. The tannins are refined and leave you with a lasting, bitter cherry sweetness that tingles with lingering acidity. A superb wine.

My number three wine of the night and honestly it was a close call against the Scavino, Bric dël Fiasc. The nose of the Marenca, draws you in with dusty red fruit, topsoil, undergrowth and sweet tar. On the palate, I found ripe strawberry with savory mushroom and tobacco that lead to a clean red fruit finish with silky tannin. This wine is drinking great right now with proper decanting.

Cherry, red licorice nose. Nice vegetal, herbal flavors with a red fruit edge. Hints of dark chocolate, spice, cedar box, and light leather.

Licorice on the nose. Dry and tart with some menthol notes.

Initially, the nose showed roses with new leather, tar, anise and sour red fruit hiding behind it all. The palate was very tight with savory beef broth, minerals, old cedar and cranberry. The finish showed sour red fruits with cheek puckering tannin lingering toward the end. As this bottle approached the fifth hour; the nose retained many of it's initial qualities but a rich (not sweet) cherry tobacco had moved to the front along with dusty dried flowers. The palate had taken on more body as a mix of red berries, cinnamon and sauté mushroom led to a slightly gravely tannin on the tremendously long finish. At the seventh, and last hour (only because we couldn't stop ourselves from drinking it). This bottle had become almost impossible to ignore as the cherry took on darker, woody and mentholated tones in the nose. The roses had become sweet and the tar faded to the rear. On the palate, sweeter red berries with cherry liqueur, spice, and soil took over. The tannins on the finish had faded to a slight drying sensation and left me with cranberry and cedar, which lasted for a full minute.

Pira's Barolo Marenca is one of the biggest, most extroverted wines being made today in Piedmont and the 2006 is no exception. It shows a touch more opulence [than the Margheria] in its intense, dark fruit. Readers will find incredible harmony here, and a finish that lasts forever. Iron, tar, licorice and smoke linger on the powerful finish. This is a marvelous Barolo from Pira, but patience is the key.
