Louis M. Martini 'Sonoma' Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Rich mocha, toast, leather and vanilla aromas top a core of slightly herbal black currant and spicy plum fruit. Round and opulent on entry with soft acidity, this quickly turns inky and tough on the palate with plenty of wood tannins and an extracted feel. Chewy and dark, with wild cherry, plum and blackberry flavors all wrapped up in copious wood spice, this is a big, intense wine that finishes with lots of tannin and power, even revealing a bit more zippiness of acidity that the palate seems to deliver. Big, chewy and powerful, there isn't a lot of nuance or detail here. 88pts

Louis M. Martini Winery:
We believe that Cabernet Sauvignon is the most noble of grapes. We believe that great winemaking begins with great vineyards, and we want the land to speak through our wines. Our wines express the best characteristics of Cabernet, the personality of the special places where our grapes are grown, and the vision and skill of the winemaker in blending balanced, engaging, and memorable wines.

Gift from Gilmore's on 5/23/15. I enjoyed this, number one because it was a gift, secondly because it maintained it's bite even though it was opened around Christmas 2016 and I am enjoying it's last glass on 1/1/17.

Decent Sonoma County cab from Louis Martini. Red and black cherry, dried prune, medium tannin and light to moderate acidity. Nothing over the top, just a decent middle of the road cab.

One of those great values is the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma (87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petite Sirah and the rest Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Franc that achieved 13.9% alcohol). The wine’s pH of 3.8 probably explains its silky texture. There are 420,000 cases of this dense wine that exhibits lots of black currant and black cherry fruit intertwined with background earth and oak (it was aged in tanks with French and American staves). This medium to full-bodied Cabernet reveals excellent purity as well as lots of flavor intensity. Drink it over the next 5–6 years.

Always one of the best buys in Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petite Sirah, 4% Merlot and 4% Zinfandel) offers a deep ruby/plum color, classic black cherry and blackcurrant fruit intermixed with background spice, and soft, supple tannins. This medium-bodied, easygoing, attractive, savory Cabernet should drink well for 5–7 years.

Our Louis M. Martini Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of the unique characteristics from several vineyards, creating a superbly balanced Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has ripe flavors of black plum jam and black currant, a reflection of the warmer vintage. Hints of oak and a touch of baking spice support the fruit. Wine Description: Ripe flavors of black plum jam and black currant, a reflection of the warmer vintage. Hints of oak and a touch of baking spice support the fruit. Description: For 80 years, the Martini family winemakers have crafted world-class Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the exceptional vineyards of Sonoma and Napa counties. Louis M. Martini embodied a simple, honest premise: The best grapes make the best wines. Today, third-generation winemaker Michael Martini carries on this tradition at the historic winery in Napa Valley with his range of unforgettable Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Viticulture Notes: In 2012, we selected more than half of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for this wine from our own vineyards in Sonoma County, with the balance coming from our longstanding partner growers. Specifically, we looked to our Frei Ranch Vineyard and Stefani Vineyard in the Dry Creek Valley AVA, as well as our Barrelli Creek Vineyard in the Alexander Valley AVA. The 2012 vintage was warmer than the previous few years, resulting in ripe, dark fruit flavors in our Cabernet grapes. Winemaking Notes: After harvest, the grapes were destemmed and cold soaked for up to 48 hours to improve extraction of the rich Cabernet flavors. The wine was then readily warmed to temperatures between 88°F and 92°F to enhance the jammy fruit characteristics. Once fermentation reached its halfway point, we slowly dropped the temperature to give the yeast a more hospitable environment. Finally, the grapes were pressed when the optimal balance of flavor and structure was reached. We added roughly eight percent Petite Sirah for its dark fruit characteristics and firm structure, along with a hint of Merlot to encourage a plush mouthfeel. - Winery Varietal Content: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Merlot Titratable Acidity: 0.57g/100ml pH: 3.76 Alcohol Level: 13.9% Residual Sugar: .45g/100ml

The Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted from several of Sonoma County's most prestigious appellations and blended seamlessly to bring together the unique characteristics of each, creating a superbly balanced Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine offers many layers, featuring aromas and flavors of red cherry, blackberry and fresh sage with an underlying dry creek dustiness. Subtle herbal notes are complemented by additional layers of chocolate and vanilla, resulting in an easy drinking, but complex wine.

Consistently one of the best values in California Cabernet, Martini's Sonoma Cabernet is sourced from vineyards in Dry Creek and Alexander Valley. Plenty of ripe, high toned red fruit character with a round mouth-feel and well-integrated oak.
