Louis Claude Desvignes Morgon la Voute Saint-Vincent 2009

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

I caught up with the 2009 Morgon La Cuvee La Voute St Vincent from the father-daughter team of Louis and Claude Desvignes in June soon after its bottling. From old vines in the Douby sector associated with the Chateau Gaillard, this leads with a Cote-Rotie-like smoked meat, brown spice, pepper, and peat nose; comes to the palate with striking freshness and cut — especially considering the rather low-toned, restrained personality of two other Desvignes cuvees when they were tasted from tank in April — and finishes with saline, meaty, and tartly red berried persistence. It should be worth following for 4–6 years.

Bright purple. Pungent floral notes lift raspberry, cherry and anise aromas. Alluringly sappy and sweet but with tangy minerality adding cut and definition to bitter cherry and red berry flavors. Spicy, vibrant and long on the taut finish, with the anise and cherry notes repeating. I can’t wait to see how the big boys from this excellent producer turn out when they’re released later this year.
