Looking for a 2009 vintage preview (which Parker rates 93-98 depending on South to North orientation), I picked up this usually highly reliable, inexpensive Louis Bernard. Very little of the usual licorice, smoke or anise; rather more like fresh sweet plum - but muted. Slightly tannic with more plum on the palate. Not very showy but well balanced with plenty of Syrah notes. Excellent for the money.

With an inviting citrus, stone fruit (peach, principally) and chamomile tea nose this southern Rhone wine inveigles one to drink - especially on a hot summer day. More citrus with just a slight viognier-initiated bitterness on the finish, this clean refreshing wine is a steal for the price. Buy by the case and serve with pride as your white selection at the BBQ. Nice work.

Louis Bernard has provided good value from its headquarters in Gigondas for over 35 years. This 2009 Chateauneuf is no exception: with an inviting fruit flan nose of baked red berries and a palate-pleasing melange of sweet jammy fruit and syrah-mourvedre light spice and hardness, this wine is deliciously well-balanced - perfect for drinking now through 2016. Pairs well with roast beef and baked vegetables. Excellent value from an excellent vintage.
