Louis Bernard Red Rhone Blend Côtes du Luberon 2009

Member Review by zufrieden:

Louis Bernard has provided good value from its headquarters in Gigondas for over 35 years. This 2009 Chateauneuf is no exception: with an inviting fruit flan nose of baked red berries and a palate-pleasing melange of sweet jammy fruit and syrah-mourvedre light spice and hardness, this wine is deliciously well-balanced - perfect for drinking now through 2016. Pairs well with roast beef and baked vegetables. Excellent value from an excellent vintage.

Established in 1976 in the Rhône Valley, we strive to make terroir-driven wines expressive of the Louis Bernard style: fruity and concentrated while also supple and well-rounded. Boasting a beautiful aromatic complexity and good structure, our wines can be enjoyed young, but also have great aging potential. In order to obtain the high-quality grapes needed to make exceptional wines, Louis Bernard holds long-term contracts with about fifteen growers. Our oenologists and winemakers work closely with our growers, and we offer them incentives to surpass our defined level of quality. In this manner, we are able to obtain premium fruit year after year, enabling us to produce wines of consistent quality and style for a great value. Proof of our strategy’s success can be seen in the over thirty-five scores of 87+ points that we have received from Wine Spectator since 2000. The Chartreuse de Bonpas, a 12th century convent located just outside of Avignon in Caumont-Sur-Durance, is home to our organically-farmed estate vineyards, 42 acres of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Viognier. With an inviting citrus, stone fruit (peach, principally) and chamomile tea nose this southern Rhone wine inveigles one to drink - especially on a hot summer day. More citrus with just a slight viognier-initiated bitterness on the finish, this clean refreshing wine is a steal for the price. Buy by the case and serve with pride as your white selection at the BBQ. Nice work.

Looking for a 2009 vintage preview (which Parker rates 93-98 depending on South to North orientation), I picked up this usually highly reliable, inexpensive Louis Bernard. Very little of the usual licorice, smoke or anise; rather more like fresh sweet plum - but muted. Slightly tannic with more plum on the palate. Not very showy but well balanced with plenty of Syrah notes. Excellent for the money.
