Louis Bernard Cotes du Rhone Villages 2012
The 2011 Bernard CdRV is typical of year-over-year quality with the usual Grenache-dominated nose. There is blueberry, plum and spice on a soft entry with good red fruit on the palate. There is less depth than in 2010, but this wine is pure CdR, if a tad light for a village wine. As usual, good quality-to-price Ratio. 86 points.Add winemaker's notes

Hmmm. I have been following the modestly priced Louis Bernard line for a few years now and have never been disappointed at the quality to price ratio. This CdR Village wine is no exception. There is crushed red fruit and plum on the nose with an almost metallic note. On the palate, there is considerable acidity present for such a good vintage with a touch of cherry cola and a sizzling, longish finish. Some complexity apparent and signs that 3-5 years of bottle aging is not out of the question. Lighter in style than I'm used to in a Village wine, but excellent value nonetheless: buy a case if the style appeals. 88 points.
A complex red with very many flavours and angles. A mature wine for its age. May improve with age. Strong bursts of full bodied currant, fig with a tail of heat. Ends nicely without alcohol taste, but rather a full circle experience. VERY INTERESTING!
The next step up for Bernard is this Villages wine. There is slightly more interest for the nostrils with uncooked cured bacon and plum with a hint of mushroom. Not opening up that much, but has a nice juicy Grenache core upon entry with a medium finish laced with middling tannin. A slightly more stout entry than the basic Cotes-du-Rhone and, dare we say, decent value.
Three and a half glasses
Deep dark ripe cherry aromas. Good acidity and refreshing. Classic red fruit flavors are quite lively -- cranberry and cherry. A great value wine.
