Lot 149 Napa Valley Mount George Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
Notes: Black wine with a reddish rim. This wine is a concentrated explosion of black currants, raspberries, and chocolate. Ripe, dark, and intense throughout with highly structured fruit and tannins that deliver the big brooding fruit with silky viscosity. The acidity carries the flavors a long way and while this would benefit from a long sleep in the cellar, it is accessible now, especially if you have a lamb chop handy. Cameron Confidential: This is yet another one of Sam’s amazing Cabernet finds. One must understand that we roll where the values are in the market. Right now, the best values around are in the ultra-premium wines. That explains the 22-dollar price point on some of these cabs coming out. They might be at the high end of the spectrum for us, but these are some of the best deals we’ve ever offered Like a Rutherford or an Oakville cab, this wine is super fat. There are certain types of wines that we send into the critics looking for low to mid 90pt scores, this is one of those wines. This wine came to us from the same winemaker that made Lot 143, another great Cabernet from Howell Mountain. This wine comes from Mount George (located just back behind Napa proper), which has recently been a trending region in the wine world. The vineyard we sourced this wine from is located just next door to famous Cabernet producer Jarvis. It has amazing soil for vines; it just hasn’t been assigned an AVA yet. If you like enormous Cabernet, this one is a steal for 22 bucks.
Editorial Reviews for Lot 149 Napa Valley Mount George Cabernet Sauvignon
Touch of Va, Deep, muscular, big herbs, eucalyptus, smoke, really ripe huge note of black currant fruit, this is intense, complex and balance, this is pretty awesome stuff. Still tight in the mouth, lots of acid to hang the fruit on, phenomenal freshness, wild blueberries, floral tones, a hint of oak, cocoa, real intriguing back note of roast meat, powerful follow through yet with excellent balance. A nice gamy note on the finish with tons of soft tannins closing in. this needs 1-2 years to really drink at peak but is very impressive already for it’s potential. 92pts
This also has a distinct herbal tone on the nose, but it’s classic Cabernet and smells like mountain fruit with crisp black currant backed up by perfummy oak with hints of pencil lead, baking spices, sweet cream, and slightly astringent fruit. On the palate this is big and rich with powerful tannins that are super finely polished making this seem a little light at times but lurking inside of this is a core of dense fruit. Really showing great balance today, it’s a tight little bugger that only offers glimpses of the intense fruit that is waiting to pop. The finish while short, offers up nice notes of dark cherry fruit and a touch of mint. Give this 2 or three 3 years and this is going to be a great bottle of Cabernet. 92pts
This wine is drinkable now. Because it is so fruit forward I don't think it will get better with age even though it is an 07 Napa Cab. Day 1 is was very fruit forward almost late harvest. Day 2 the sweetness dissipated and the wine showed better. Day 3 it had still not turned and was the best on Day 3. Go ahead and decant this wine hours before dinner. Dinner has to hold up to this full-bodied, rich, soft tannin wine with meats in sauces.
