What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Notes on the Loring Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch 2005 : OTHER REVIEW: POINTS Medium-light to medium ruby; attractive, intense, complex, slightly smoky, spicy, raspberry and red cherry fruit aroma with hints of charred oak and vanilla; medium-full body; forward, moderately rich, raspberry and cherry fruit flavors; well balanced; medium-full tannin; slightly harsh on the finish; lingering aftertaste. Reviews

Medium-body, complex, and well-integrated. Combines soft cherry, dried cranberry with a brambly, earthy undertone. Finish with a good bit of acid. Well balanced. Good food wine.

Rating: 88/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 130, January/February 2007 ($48; 13.7%) Medium red. Spicy red fruits, cola and underbrush on the musky nose. Suppler and a bit sweeter than the Naylor offering, with a bit more ripeness to its flavors of cherry, berries and clove. In a rounder style but a wine of moderate intensity and depth.Finishes with good ripe acidity.

A touch of green mint is evident on the nose, with a beam of tart, lively wild berry and blackberry fruit that's well-focused. Young and tight, this has crisp acidity and a cleansing, berry-laced finish. Drink now through 2010. 650 cases made. &#8211... Wine Spectator. Rating: 91/100 - As reviewed by Vinfolio in Issue 83 Heading further north, Keefer is a benchmark site for many top flight Pinots. It is known for a softer interpretation of fruit. Earth and spicy red fruits on the nose, cherry and creamy dark fruit on the palate, dusty acidity on the finish.
