Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Rioja Blanco Gran Reserva 19 1997

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very honied on the nose with note of dried earth and old wood. Turns a bit vegetal with notes of braised radicchio and anise ut there is a nice core or waxy quince, bitter orange and lime that struggles to emerge. This shows a lot of evolution and is not a particularly fresh bottle with a soft top note of vanilla cream, caramel and tea. Bright and lean on entry with decent focus to the core of citrus fruit. This lacks a bit of flesh and is angular and a bit dried out though the finish is long and offers nice clementine notes. Not a pristine bottle 87pts

This opens with a rather intense asparagus note over sweeter braised celery tones. There is an emerging floral note but of a sturdy sort recalling carnations and the vegetal component takes on a fave bean note. Nuances of water chestnut, smoke, and waxy lipstick emerge with air. Freah and coiled on the attack with a burst of yellow cherry fruit right up fron then a very mineral mid-palate with excellent cut and precision. The back end remains quartzy with notes of almond milk and lime zest leading to a finish with echoes of dried peach, popcorn, ham and some smoky tobacco and pecan notes. Pretty interesting stuff and certainly not for everyone but a lovely bottle. 92pts

Fresh and intensely aromatic with layered fruit that suggest mangosteen and waxy yellow cherry, there is a nuance of starchy vegetal that resembles sunchoke but the notes of smoky bacon, almond, licorice all wrapped up with a saline edge are completely intriguing. Smooth and showing excellent integration in the mouth this has a gentle core of honied yellow berried fruit with lovely notes of blond tobacco, pollen, and game adding complexity. There is a nice citrus core to the fruit that leads to the long finish which is sweet and precise. 93pts

Very soft and sweet smelling with figgy fruit over a bed of slate, gains lovely spice notes that recall Chinese 5-spice with a strong star anise element and an effusive lanoline note. With air there emerges am iodine element that turns rather seaweedy with time. Resolved and relaxed in the mouth yet with great depth of flavor. The fruit is deep and earthy with nuanced nut, vanilla, rose petal, red cherry and oystershell notes. The mid-palate is bright and layered with notes of mineral and fresh nut meat adding complexity. This really gains in the glass opening to reveal a fleshy, mouth filing personality that has deeply mineral and salince, like licking limestone. Lemon custard lingers on the long finihs. Excellent freshness, complexity and depth. Brilliant bottle 95pts

This is a brilliant wine, beautifully sweet, oxidized nose with honey, honeysuckle and toasted almonds but a completely dry mouth. The balance and freshness is impeccable. Read about my experience of tasting it here: http://twosisterswinetripping.com/2012/07/the-temple-of-my-faith/
