Lopez de Heredia Gravonia Crianza Blanco 2008

Member Review by Mary Margaret McCamic:

Firm stone fruit notes, earth, and mineral. Medium-bodied with a pleasant kick of acidity on the palate. Very good now, and I'd love to see how it mellows over the next year.

A beautiful 100% Viura from LH's Gravonia vineyard, with flavors of lightly toasted almonds, white tea, pears and soft vanilla- great structure and unreal, almost electric acidity, though there is also some gentle citrus blossom in there.

The 2005 Viña Gravonia Blanco Crianza, from a harvest that was slightly shorter than 2004 but of a similar quality, is pure Viura from very old vines fermented in old oak vats and matured in old oak barrels for four years. It starts off slightly reduced, and needs time and air, so decanting in advance is not out of place. The palate is much more precise, pungent, intense, very balanced and persistent. The nose finally comes on its own with developed notes of petrol, beeswax and chamomile, perhaps a little more evolved than its siblings. This is a white full of personality, ready now. Character, at very good price. 52,000 bottles produced.

A white Rioja composed of 100% Viura grapes, aged four years in barrels, racked twice a year and fined with fresh egg whites. The result is a fresh, complex bouquet that leads to well-developed fruit, impeccably balanced with a vibrant stream of acidity. Ideal with firm-fleshed fish such as grilled sea bass and tuna. Also try it with sticky risotto steeped in seafood stock.

This is the newly released vintage of Lopez de Heredia's "young" white wine. In the flush of youth, it is ready to drink, but of course shows the complexity of the slow, gentle aging process this house is famous for.

Lopez de Heredia makes memorable, extremely age-worthy wines. Still extremely youthful, full of fruit and acidity, with a Burgundian texture, this wine can age for decades more. Notes of raspberry, black plum, orange zest, and coffee burst from the glass.
