Try balance, harmony and nature for starters. Surfing is part sport, part meditation and all working within, rather than against, nature. Winemaking? Pretty similar approach. Both surfers and winemakers reach the summit of their respective crafts when they attain an understanding of, and a respect for, the environment in which they work (and play). Adapting to their surroundings, they achieve peak performance, on the waves and in the vineyards.
External Reviews for Longboard Vineyards Merlot Russian River Valley Dakine Vineyard
From Odeds Dakine Vineyard. This Merlot has 19% Malbec in it, part of the field blend in this old vineyard on Westside Road. Always a favorite. Rumor has it that Miles (from the movie Sideways) turned to Pinot Noir only because Dakine Merlot was his ex-wifes favorite wine! - Winery
Longboard Vineyards Merlot DaKine Vineyard Russian River Valley 2008 750ML
"DaKine" (pronounced Dah-kine) comes from the Pidgin Hawaiian language and is often used to describe a great event (although the word could really mean anything). Unlike most Merlots destined to be blended into other wines, this vineyard makes a wine that is superb by itself. The 2008 DaKine Merlot is lush with Black Currant, Violet and Blueberry aromas that lead to a generous mid-palate of full and sweet tannins, ripe olive and dark chocolate flavors. The finish is long and slightly spicy, a unique characteristic of this cold-climate fruit. Drink it now or age it for the next 7 years. - Winery

Young and still rough around the edges, but thereandrsquo;s plenty of jammy black cherry, ripe plum and spicy fruit.
Hereandrsquo;s a pretty, polished Merlot that features a good structure and ripe, forward fruit flavors. With its rich tannins, it has lush flavors of black and red cherries, currants, licorice, peppery spices and sweet oak, finishing with a touch of raisins. Seems best now, but give it a good decant.
