Longboard Merlot Russian River Valley 2009

External Review:

Rating: 87/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the November 2010 issue. If its obvious accents of smoke, charred wood and forest floor are a bit outside of varietal convention, this plump, smoothly textured Merlot gets things right as far as feel and its essential cherry-like fruit goes. It is framed with just enough tannin to argue for a bit of patience, but it drinks nicely now with savory beef dishes and it should reach its best in but three or four years.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

Longboard Vineyards:
Try balance, harmony and nature for starters. Surfing is part sport, part meditation and all working within, rather than against, nature. Winemaking? Pretty similar approach. Both surfers and winemakers reach the summit of their respective crafts when they attain an understanding of, and a respect for, the environment in which they work (and play). Adapting to their surroundings, they achieve peak performance, on the waves and in the vineyards.
