Long Shadows Vintners was founded in 2002 by Washington wine visionary Allen Shoup, who as President and CEO of Chateau Ste. Michelle from 1984-2000 forged internationally acclaimed winemaking partnerships with Piero Antinori (Col Solare) and Dr. Ernst Loosen (Eroica Riesling). Long Shadows Vintners now builds upon those successes by bringing an elite cadre of the world’s most celebrated winemakers from the finest wine regions around the globe to Washington in order to create world class wines that showcase the viticultural excellence of Washington State's Columbia Valley. Each celebrated vintner partners individually with Shoup and resident winemaker Gilles Nicault on a distinct winemaking program to produce a single “best of type” wine under a unique label. These include: Pedestal Merlot by Michel Rolland (international consultant and owner Le Bon Pasteur, Pomerol); Sequel Syrah by John Duval (formerly of Penfold’s Grange, South Australia); Poet’s Leap Riesling by Armin Diel (Schlossgut Diel, Nahe, Germany); Pirouette by Agustin Huneeus (Quintessa, Napa Valley) and Philippe Melka (Vineyard 29, Hundred Acre, Napa Valley); Chester-Kidder by Allen Shoup and Gilles Nicault (former winemaker at Woodward Canyon, Walla Walla Valley); Feather Cabernet Sauvignon by Randy Dunn (Dunn Vineyards, Napa Valley, formerly of Caymus); and Saggi by Ambrogio & Giovanni Folonari (Cabreo, Nozzole, from Chianti Classico and La Fuga, Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany). Long Shadows is named in tribute to the stature of this select group of individuals, who continue to shape the wine industry with their benchmark wines and wineries. Read less

Australian winemaker John Duval is the winemaker for Long Shadowsrsquo; signature Syrah. His experience shows in the Oz-like color (almost black), the spicy berry, plum, cherry and currant fruit, and the silky, polished tannins. Interestingly, Duval uses a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, rather than going with Viognier. The wine seems to be holding something back; itrsquo;s definitely got some years ahead.

The 2005 Sequel is made by John Duval, former winemaker of Penfolds Grange. The wine is 96% Syrah and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 16 months in mostly French oak. Aromas of cedar, smoke, game, bacon, and violets are alluring while leading to a round, layered, smooth-textured, full-bodied wine with several years of aging potential. This hedonistic effort will be at its best from 2012 to 2020.

Firm in texture, with a crisp feel to the tannins under the ripe, narrowly focused blackberry, plum and black olive flavors. The finish keeps singing, however, as the pretty flavors persist. Drink now through 2011.

Bright ruby-red. Wild berries and flowers on the nose, showing little of syrahrsquo;s animal side. Dense, pure and intensely flavored, with superb retention of primary fruits. Like most of these 2005s, this is tight and backward today but very fresh, and in need of patience. Finishes with notes of wild herbs and pepper and building tannins. A worthy follow-up to the superb 2004 version.
