Long Shadows Riesling Poet's Leap 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

"Half of this year’s Poet’s Leap Riesling is sourced from The Benches, one quarter from old-vine plantings at Dionysus, and the rest from Yakima’s Phil Church vineyard. Marvelous concentration and a panoply of lush orange, apricot, peach and papaya flavors carry this beautifully balanced wine through a long and satisfying finish. Delicious young, it could also be cellared for a decade or longer...94" WE Editors Choice

Long Shadows Vintners was founded in 2002 by Washington wine visionary Allen Shoup, who as President and CEO of Chateau Ste. Michelle from 1984-2000 forged internationally acclaimed winemaking partnerships with Piero Antinori (Col Solare) and Dr. Ernst Loosen (Eroica Riesling). Long Shadows Vintners now builds upon those successes by bringing an elite cadre of the world’s most celebrated winemakers from the finest wine regions around the globe to Washington in order to create world class wines that showcase the viticultural excellence of Washington State's Columbia Valley. Each celebrated vintner partners individually with Shoup and resident winemaker Gilles Nicault on a distinct winemaking program to produce a single “best of type” wine under a unique label. These include: Pedestal Merlot by Michel Rolland (international consultant and owner Le Bon Pasteur, Pomerol); Sequel Syrah by John Duval (formerly of Penfold’s Grange, South Australia); Poet’s Leap Riesling by Armin Diel (Schlossgut Diel, Nahe, Germany); Pirouette by Agustin Huneeus (Quintessa, Napa Valley) and Philippe Melka (Vineyard 29, Hundred Acre, Napa Valley); Chester-Kidder by Allen Shoup and Gilles Nicault (former winemaker at Woodward Canyon, Walla Walla Valley); Feather Cabernet Sauvignon by Randy Dunn (Dunn Vineyards, Napa Valley, formerly of Caymus); and Saggi by Ambrogio & Giovanni Folonari (Cabreo, Nozzole, from Chianti Classico and La Fuga, Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany). Long Shadows is named in tribute to the stature of this select group of individuals, who continue to shape the wine industry with their benchmark wines and wineries. Read less

12.5 grams per liter residual sugar Gorgeous aromatics, all lime zesty and spicy with herbal nuance greet the nose over creamy lemon pith with a hint almost cinnamon spice. A bit sweet early on the palate with nicely integrated acids. This is a little dusty on the palate showing early signs of strawberry fruit that turns more creamy and sweet with citrus and apricot notes on the backend before finishing with some dusty astringency. A nice juxtaposition of sweet and dry, this comes of as just a bit rustic but with lovely complexity. 89pts

Full-bodied, bright Washington Riesling with nice doughnut, peach and nectarine flavors. A strong, driving acidity keeps this bright and vibrant, with a nice minerality interlaced.

Top-notch Riesling seems often to need a bit of age in order to show itself to full advantage and this quite promising wine must be marked as one of that ilk. Its very keenly focused aromas are still on the reluctant side at this point and while delivering a look at flowers and white peaches it does so in a way that begs for patience. And with flavors that are equal in focus but are also equal in their tightness we would suggest that its followers lay in a supply and leave it alone for a ye
