What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Reviews

This is a Gold Medal Wine Club Pinot Noir series Selection. Londer Vineyard’s 2006 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir is a refined, elegant achievement with savory, concentrated flavors that beautifully express the region’s flavor potential. Medium ruby in the glass with bright rose glints, this Pinot showcases aromas of cranberry-raspberry cocktail, cinnamon sticks, fresh raspberries and strawberries. The medium body is well balanced with juicy acidity and very soft, fine-grained tannins. Notes of pomegranate and cranberry dominate the palate, with hints of baking spices, dried mushrooms read more...

CG 91pts. - WS 90pts. - According to the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: Yet another strong showing from Londer in 2006, this bright and very well-balanced wine is at once both rich and vital with lots of concentrated, ripe-cherry fruit and a fine fleshy feel. It is accessible now and its careful combination of ripeness and well-defined varietal fruit stays the course through to a very long and involving finish. According to the Wine Spectator: Fresh and floral, restrained and elegant, even understated, with dark plum, black cherry, herb and savory berry flavors that linger. Drink now through 2011.

One of the better values this year, with raspberry and earth aromas. There's still a fair amount of acidity in the mid-palate, with raspberry and bing cherry flavors. A short finish brings this wine to an abrupt close.

I tasted this and enjoyed it alongside a Grand Echezaux, so that says a lot! My friend got me a bottle for my birthday. It is a heavier pinot, with a very full mouthfeel and a strong nose. Great berries and smooth features make this pinot well worth it. 14.7% by volume would make you think this was a zin or cab!
