What to Expect

Austria's Grüner Veltliner has emerged as one of the most recent additions to the iconic wines of the world. It is almost singularly associated with Austria where it is widely planted, though it shares certain nomenclature with wines produced in Germany. While one may find terms such as Spatlese and Auslese on a bottle, there are a set of terms, unique to Austrian wine, that are more indicative of the quality in the bottle. These three terms are used exclusively in the Wachau region, where much of the finest Gruner comes from. The base level of quality, Steinfeder, is used to denote a lower alcohol wine vinified in a fresh, dry style. Next comes Federspiel, which is richer and fuller than Steinfeder, though not necessarily better. Finally there are the Smaragd wines, produced from grapes harvested at least later than those for the preceding wines and thus producing richer, headier wines that may retain a touch of residual sugar as tradition indicates. No matter what wine you choose, expect a fresh, bright, slightly vegetal scented wine with notes of flowers and white pepper accenting the green berry fruits.

Drank over over 3-4 hours. A lemon-floral perfume developed, full-bodied, crisp and bold citrus flavors with notes of butter and pineapple on the palette. hints of petrol and oak. While I've had the Gruner Veltliner grape before, I don't think I had tasted a wine that so closely resembled read more...
