Lioco Chardonnay Alexander Valley 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

It's rare to encounter a California Chardonnay that's not hiding under a thick guise of buttery oak. If ever there were an example of what Chardonnay has the potential to be in California, this is certainly it. Kevin O'Connor, the former wine director at Wolfgang Puck's famous LA restaurant, Spago, is co-founder of this incredible winery, which is reinventing the definition of California wine. This fantastic Carneros bottling is completely unoaked and brims with clean, brilliant notes of ripe apple and lemon curd. This is fresh, mouth-filling and just beautiful on the palate.

WHAT IS LIOCO? LIOCO is the result of a years-long conversation between Matt Licklider (a seasoned wine import specialist) and Kevin O'Connor (wine director at Michelin Two-Star Spago-Beverly Hills) about whether California could produce a true "wine of origin." WHAT DOES THE WORD LIOCO MEAN? It is a fusion of our last names, Licklider and O'Connor. LI-cklider + OCO-nnor = LIOCO. WHAT IS LIOCO'S FOCUS? + Stainless-steel (un-oaked), naturally-fermented (all native yeast) Chardonnay from pedigreed growers. + Gently treated (low wood impact), naturally-fermented (all native yeast) Pinot Noir from pedigreed growers. + A distinctly Californian blend of "under-dog" varietals (including Old-Vine Carignan, Petite Sirah, Grenache and Mourvedre). WHAT IS LIOCO'S CORE BELIEF? Careful vineyard selection combined with a restrained winemaking approach will produce compelling wine. WHAT IS LIOCO'S PHILOSOPHY? + Great wine is grown, not made. + Maximize control of the creative process, "from bud to bottle." + Grace and balance before power. + Be dynamic and demystifying at every turn. + Over-deliver for the price point. WHAT IS LIOCO'S CREDO? "Building wine from the ground up." WHAT DISTINGUISHES LIOCO FROM OTHER WINERIES? + We produce a range of wines, from multiple grape varieties growing in several distinct appellations (Chardonnay in Sonoma; Pinot Noir in Chalone; Carignan in Mendocino). + Our unique production process. We buy fruit from independent growers throughout California and make the wine in a state-of-the-art cooperative in Santa Rosa. We do not own any vineyards, nor do we own a winery. All of our resources are directed toward the sourcing of grapes from the state's premier vineyards. Read less

Extremely aromatic - almost Viognier-like - in its fruity-floral notes. Perfumed with gardenia, orange blossom, green melon and pear, with just a touch of caramel and butter. Yet on the palate, the rich buttercream coats the tongue, while layers of crisp tropical fruits peek through. A truly dazzling white - bold, yet elegant. Easily worth twice the price!

Fragrant, with fresh, floral pear, honeysuckle, fig and melon flavors that are clean and refreshing, gaining depth and nuance on the finish, with light toasty oak notes. Drink now through 2011.

Pale gold. Vibrant, pure aromas of citrus fruit, flowers and herbs. Juicy lime and lemongrass flavors are complemented by notes of anise and honeysuckle. Gains power on the finish, which strongly repeats the anise note and offers good mineral cut. This is an outstanding value.

Bright yellow-gold. Powerful scents of guava, tangerine, honey and herbs, with a subtle smoky quality in the background. Smooth and fleshy on entry, then more taut in the mid-palate, offering juicy tropical fruit and citrus pith flavors with a touch of anise. Finishes with very good persistence, solid grip and a resonating note of candied lemon.

This unoaked, naturally fermented chardonnay is made from a selection of vineyards planted on rocky, alluvial ldquo;creek-bedrdquo; soils. Itrsquo;s creamy and broad, with honeydew melon flavors and floral scents of apple blossoms and thistles. A simple, smooth chardonnay for prawns grilled with butter-and-sugar corn.
