Licia Albariño Rías Baixas Licia 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

Albarino is found most commonly in northwestern Spain--the part north of Portugal. This grape loves the cool Atlantic breezes that are prevalent in the coastal areas of that region. It produces clean, crisp wines with a lot of personality. Licia’s 2010 Albarino was made from 100% estate grown fruit fermented and aged for 5 months in stainless steel. Lemon and mineral aromas compose the inviting nose of this well-priced Albarino. Crisp, flavorful, and nicely proportioned, this lengthy offering will deliver enjoyment for another 3 years.- Wine Advocate

This shows an almost herbal note early on nose followed by peach and dried lemon pith aromas. Quite smooth and polished in the mouth, though with no shortage of brightening acidity, this shows rather intense lemon, quince and almost tropical fruit flavors. The finish reverts to lighter apple notes but superimposed on lovely suggestions of green tea and hints of minerality. 88pts

Mary said it was the best white of the year (June 2013). Of course it should be noted, her total to date summer white wine samplings now number two. She consumed this with her friend, Joyce, while I was in Texas visiting our 23 month old granddaughter. I have placed an order for another half case, so I might too enjoy this Albarino. Those additional six are finished. It is now (6-18-2014) and they are all gone from my small, yet special, cellar. Simply the best young white wine out there people! Go get some before I buy it all. OK, honestly, you have time, limited retirement budget here, but do not miss this taste treat.

Update - May 2015: I just had this wine again at Chop Shop in Chelsea (Manhattan, not London) with a vegetarian Thai curry. Great value and nice pairing!
