Librandi "Gravello" 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

DOUBLE MAGNUMThis is a "Super Calabrian" wine made from the indigenous Gaglioppo and international Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Gravello is a fantasy name, but "grave" in Italian means "serious" and "important," which is a reference to the complexity and sophistication of this wine. The suffix of "-ello" makes this meaning a bit lighter, as the wine is accessible and drinking beautifully right now.Tasting NotesDeep ruby-red in color, Gravello is intensely aromatic with notes of blackberry, ripe cherry, coffee, and cassis. On the palate, it is rich with velvety tannins and a persistent finish.Food PairingPair this wine with grilled game, Mornay sauces, Chateaubriand, and duxelles-stuffed filet mignon.

This area is naturally suited to wine growing: the soil is predisposed for vines and its happy geographic position, close to the sea with the Sila Mountains at its back, is such that it guarantees an excellent contrast between day-and-night time temperatures. Labrandi has grown grapes for four generations and in the 50s began botling as well. Read less

60% Galiopo, 40% Cabernet. Inviting, playful nose. Just the word Galiopo makes you want to laugh, a fun wine. Finishes bright red on top of soft elegant Cabernet tannins. Drank this wine again at dinner later in the night, when paired with food it showed a little darker and subdued, allowing the food and the wine to work well together.
