Librandi Cirò Rosato 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Dark red. Vibrant aromas of red fruits, licorice and minerals. Supple and much sweeter than usual, with brisk acidity framing the ripe red fruit and licorice flavors. For such a fresh wine, this boasts impressive creamy texture and breadth. Finishes with good balance, lift and length. This is the fruitiest Duca San Felice I ever recall tasting, something not altogether easy to achieve with the gaglioppo grape, which could best be defined as yielding wines that are generally "fruit-challenged." I felt there might be a hint of residual sugar here adding to the impression of creaminess, but the wine finishes dry. --Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

This area is naturally suited to wine growing: the soil is predisposed for vines and its happy geographic position, close to the sea with the Sila Mountains at its back, is such that it guarantees an excellent contrast between day-and-night time temperatures. Labrandi has grown grapes for four generations and in the 50s began botling as well. Read less

If you ever wondered why people meant when they described a wine tasting of hay, we'll drink this. But yummy hay.

Cirò is produced from Gaglioppo, the most important grape variety in Calabria. This red has spicy fruit on the nose, with an elegant texture supported by firm, ripe tannins.
