Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit reticent on the nose with some pencil shavings and lots of tart red fruit. A bit soft in the mouth and broad. lacking a bit of acidic brightness though this does deliver lots of black cherry and black currant fruit with a nice toasty oak base note and some peppery spice on the backend. The finish is almost non-existent with dry powdery tannins being the main feature. This is easy drinking and easy to understand but a bit ordinary. 83pts

Winemaker's association with Caymus keeps this cab consistently good. One of my favorites under $15

Well-balanced, wonderful wine--especially for its price.

Somewhat restrained but very fruit forward on the nose with lots of fresh blackberry/blueberry and some slight herbaceous leafy notes. Maybe sweet black licorice notes, too. A simple and very juicy wine on the palate with lots of ripe tannins. Some acidity, but I felt like it could have used more to make it "pop", if that makes sense. Fairly long length.

They say don't judge by the label, but in this case my hunch that I was starting in on a some mediocre California slosh turned out to be correct. Sugary and lacking in character and interesting flavors. Blekh.

Notes: The 2014 Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon has a beautiful ruby-black color with a ruby red rim. Bright fruit aromas of fresh blackberry, black cherry and boysenberry along with hints of violets, leather and toasted oak fill the glass. On the palate, this elegant, medium-bodied Cabernet is filled with lush black cherry and pomegranate flavors complemented by juicy acidity along with notes of cracked black pepper, dried black tea leaves and a touch of vanilla that leads to a long velvety finish. For over three decades, Liberty School has been among the best values in California wine. In the early 1980’s, Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles caught the attention of renowned Napa Valley vintner Chuck Wagner of Caymus Vineyards. Because of the incredible quality and value of their Paso Robles Cab, Wagner approached Hope Farms in search of Cabernet for his second label wine, Liberty School. The Hope family helped build the brand’s solid reputation over the years and in 1996, the Hopes took over the label. Austin Hope, who started working under Chuck Wagner, in the early 1990s, heads the winemaking team and their goal has always been the same; to produce delicious, fruit-driven, varietally correct wines at reasonable prices. This 2013 is a prime example, Wine Enthusiast Magazine made it an "Editors' Choice" and said "A solid wine for the price... This bottling shows bacon fat, tart blackberry, black loam and baked goods on a just-enough-of-everything nose. The soft palate is smooth, with mouth-coating tannins and flavors of cigar leaf, black currant and black pepper." Super Value!

Ruby black in color, the 2013 Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon displays classic Cabernet aromas of black currant, crushed blackberry and cherry, with undertones of charred sandalwood, black peppercorn, eucalyptus and a dash of cinnamon. On the palate, dark berries, cherry and a hint of toasted oak unfold as the velvety tannins and balancing acidity lead to a long, fruit driven finish. Alcohol: 13.5%

TASTING NOTES: The 2012 Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep ruby color. In the glass, the wine exudes aromas of plum, black currants, blackberry, smoke, and earth. Soft tannins and bright acidity add a sense of balance and substance to this full-bodied Cabernet. Concentrated flavors of juicy raspberries and black cherries dominate the entry, while refined notes of earth and pepper emerge as the wine unfolds on the palate. The wine leaves lingering hints of cherry on the long and satisfying finish. HARVEST NOTES: The 2012 growing season in California's Central Coast was a welcome surprise after two years of moderate harvests. 2012 was a record crop across the state, not only from a quantity standpoint, but quality as well. Ideal weather conditions -- just the right amount of rainfall and no major frost events -- allowed a wonderful fruit to set, enjoy a long growing season, and produced a bountiful crop. Cabernet was harvested throughout the month of October and into early November. WINEMAKING NOTES: Our Cabernet Sauvignon is harvested and fermented individually by vineyard lots and then barreled into a combination of French and American oak barrels, 10% of which are new. The wine is racked twice during barrel-aging and gently filtered just prior to bottling. The 2012 Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon was aged 18 months. Total Acidity: 0.64 g/100mL pH: 3.80 Alcohol: 13.5%

This Cabernet Sauvignon offers up-front aromas of ripe red fruit, followed by similar vibrant and rich berry flavors. Silky but firm tannins lend excellent structure, while maintaining a soft approachability reflective of Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has a ripe finish with good length.
