What to Expect

"Black and bitter" in Italian, not surprisingly Negroamaro has origins in the Southern Italy's Puglia region and is an important grape both on its own and as a blending grape. It contributes a rich, slightly rustic mouthfeel to a finished wine imbued with a slightly burnt, earthy quality that accentuates deep, roasted plum and mocha toned fruit.

Winemakers Notes

The Masseria Li Veli is an imposing building on the southernmost slopes of the Murge hills in the Salento peninsula. The project is the result of a partnership between the Guercia Sammarco, Maci and Falvo families. Together they decided to give new life to an old dream of the Marquis Antonio De Viti De Marco, a famous Italian economist who at the beginning of the century had chosen this farm to transform it into a model winery for the whole of southern Italy. The existing stone structure has been transformed and enlarged, following a well-planned and functional design in keeping with the style and read more...layout of the original building. Avignonesi, the Montepulciano-based producer renowned for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Vin Santo, bought the Li Veli estate in 1999. The first vintage was 2000, and the quality of the wine confirmed to Ettore Falvo, Avignonesi’s director of winemaking, the potential of the Salento peninsula for the production of top quality wines. This is almost black in colour, with smoky, plumy perfumes on the nose, giving way to ripe, succulent fruit on the palate, good depth and long length.    (hide)
