A Merlot wine from California in USA. 1997 Lewis Cellars Merlot Napa 750ml

Vintage: 1994 11/13/2010

Rating: 96/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the November 2010 issue. The only three-star wine in this tasting, the Lewis 1994 has stood the test of time in such grand fashion that it will remain at peak drinkability or even grow for at least a decade. Refined, sophisticated, rich, alive, nuanced and so deeply filled, it is proof the California wines made from Merlot can, at their best, achieve real grandeur. Evolved yet vital, layered yet with fruit that will continue to gain depth and richness, supple with an appropriate tannic backbone for drinking now and for further ageworthiness, this is the stuff of legends and one of the most memorable wines of the year.

Winemaker's Notes:

93 points Wine Spectator: A supple texture wraps around a complex and dense core, with aromas of currant, mocha and fresh coffee bean leading to layered flavors of plum, spicy espresso and dill. Hands off for now if you can resist. Best from 2014 through 2020. 50 cases made. (2012)
