L'Etoile Banyuls Grand Cru 2000

Member Review by duncan 906:

This bottle of wine was part of a lot I bought on the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/68532.Banyuls is an appellation created in 1936,although viticulture in the area goes back to at least the Romans, for red and white fortified wines from around the Mediterranean seaside town of that name between Perpignan and the Spanish border. This is the same area as the Collioure appellation for dry red, rose and white wines.Banyuls is what the French call a 'vin doux naturel' Like most Banyuls my bottle is red and made of the grenache grape and as it is a grand cru wine has spent 30 months in oak barrels.Grape fermentation was stopped by 'mutage' ie the addition of grape spirit I started my bottle last night with a plate of cheese and biscuits. It was sweet and sticky with a cherry and menthol style fruit. It was a good match for the cheese
