Les Vignerons de Maury Maury Solera Vin Doux Naturel 1928

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/23794 for £10.50.A Vin Doux Naturel is a fortified wine where the fermentation process has been stopped by the addition of grape spirit similar to how port or sherry is made. This is why it has acheived an ABV of 17%.It comes from the area around the village of Maury which is about 15 miles west of Perpignan and 20 miles north of the Spanish border and AOC status was awarded in 1936.The wine is mainly grenache and after it is made it is kept in oak barrels and when it is bottled only a third is used and then the barrel is topped up and this was started in 1928.Each bottle bears the number of the barrel;in the case of my bottle 896.I started my bottle the other evening as an accompaniment to a plate of bread and cheese and I have to say I enjoyed it.It is very sweet and there is a lot of raisin-like fruit.I would prefer this to a port or sherry as there is more fruit and less alcohol. The only similar wines I have had is a Banyuls or the Greek Mavrodaphne

Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.
