Medium ruby. Aromas of crystallized cassis, licorice, graphite and mint. Dense but backward, and thus not showing its flesh today. But offers lovely sweetness, and subtle floral and licorice nuances. ($65-$95) Very good red-ruby. Exotic aromas of roasted red berries and spices. Sweet, lush, broad and impressively ripe. The 2000 Les Forts de Latour is a seriously endowed wine with notes of black walnuts, black currants, crushed rock, tobacco and spice box. Full-bodied, luscious but still in need of another 2-3 years to hit full maturity, it certainly can evolve for another 15 or more years, and looks to be slightly richer and longer-lived than I originally predicted.
Winemaker's Notes:
The second wine of legendary Chateau Latour. About 70 % Cabernet, 30 % Merlot-- though the exact proportion of grape varieties will vary slightly from year to year. Aged 18 months in half new and half one-vintage barrels.
